Sourcing the Stone: A Geochemical Characterisation of the South Molle Island Quarry and Implications for Regional Prehistoric Trade and Exchange

by

Dr Lara Lamb

My PhD research achieved a comprehensive technological characterisation of the South Molle Island Quarry and the stone artefacts from immediate surrounding habitation sites (Lamb 2005).  As a logical extension of this work, I plan to undertake a broader regional study of the spatial distribution of the quarry stone.  This work will test and extend the major model of cultural boundaries for the region (Barker 2005; Barker and Schon 1994).  It will also contribute significantly to the body of knowledge regarding the sweeping late Holocene changes that took place on this continent (Lourandos 1997), particularly how people negotiated movement across the landscape and the growing complexity of social networks, including systems of trade and exchange
